EVER WONDERED WHAT HAPPENS IN A PERSONAL TRAINING SESSION?

Personal trainer

Is personal training for you? Does it work?

Sometimes people think personal training is for athletes or the very wealthy but it’s not. Personal training is for everyone.

With the government actively encouraging people to get fit to protect themselves against the ravages of COVID-19, it’s never been a more important time to consider how we can boost our fitness levels and make sure our weight is at the recommended level.

Why use a personal trainer?

It makes sense to get help from trained professionals. If you had toothache you wouldn’t grab a pair of pliers and take matters into your own hands, you would go and visit a dentist. So why shouldn’t your health and fitness be the same?

Everybody is different, with different goals, abilities, levels of motivation, and physical attributes. So, it stands to reason, that every plan to get fit and healthy should be different too. One-to-one advice is the best way to do this. The best personal trainers create a bespoke plan, designed to be the most effective for the individual.

As well as being experts in fitness, good personal trainers understand nutrition, motivation, and many other interrelated issues. Some personal trainers also have additional areas of expertise. For example, all the personal trainers at Corporate Personal Wellbeing are also qualified sports therapists so they have a greater understanding of the body’s mechanics and can prescribe and deliver massage and manipulation to fix chronic injuries.

Plan to succeed

One of the first things an experienced personal trainer does is to talk to their client, they can help you establish what your goal is.

Goal setting is especially important and any PT worth their salt will make sure they are SMART goals.

At CPF, we use the SMART acronym to make sure the goals are:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Timely

For example, you may want to lose one stone in six months.

Measure and monitor

Next, they assess the client. This may include a fitness test, measuring weight, blood pressure and taking some body-fat measurements.

Every three weeks is a good time frame to monitor progress and give your body time to adjust to the weight loss you are achieving.

It’s not just exercise

Nutritional advice will be given to ensure you recover from sessions and have the energy to perform.

Exercise will be prescribed outside of your training sessions to improve your training habits and motivation.

Your personal trainer will be an expert motivator and will know how to keep you on track to achieve your goals.

Your full-body programme will contain resistance training and cardiovascular training, but it will change each three-week block after your assessments.

Will it work?

A good personal trainer and a periodised personal training plan will always deliver results. You will feel motivated and get the results you desire.
