LEVEL 3 AWARD IN FIRST AID AT WORK

The level 3 award in first aid at work is one of the mandatory qualifications set by the HSE.

It should not be confused with the Level 3 ‘Emergency’ First Aid At Work Qualification, which is a one day course for smaller, low-hazard businesses.

The level 3 award in first aid at work includes all the emergency first-aid content, plus it also equips the first-aider to apply first-aid to a range of specific injuries and illnesses.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no specific entry requirements.

There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at Level 2.

TARGET LEARNERS

Learners aged 16+

Please note that 16-18-year-olds may need to be supervised in the workplace once they have achieved the qualification.

AIM

This qualification is designed to give the learner the knowledge and skills to respond to first aid situations and administer first aid in the workplace.

IS YOUR WORKPLACE PREPARED?

The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require all employers to make arrangements to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. This includes carrying out a risk assessment, appointing a suitable amount of first aiders and providing appropriate first-aid training. However, having the correct first-aid provision in the workplace is not just a legal requirement it is incredibly important for the safety of all members of staff.

The Level 3 Award in First-Aid at Work qualification is designed for individuals who wish to act as a first-aider in their workplace. Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners will be equipped with the essential skills needed to give safe, prompt and effective first-aid in emergency situations and to apply first aid to a range of specific injuries and illnesses.

What’s more, as a regulated qualification, employees can book this course for their employees and rest assured that they have fulfilled their legal responsibilities for providing quality first-aid training without having to undertake any lengthy due diligence checks.

WHO SHOULD HAVE THE LEVEL 3 AWARD IN FIRST AID AT WORK?

The level 3 award in first aid at work is primarily for companies with low-hazard activities, e.g. offices, shops and libraries when the workforce exceeds 50.

It is also for companies with higher-hazard activities, e.g. light engineering and assembly work, food processing, warehousing, extensive work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments, construction, and chemical manufacture when the workforce exceeds 5.

For companies with low-hazard activities and a workforce of less than 50, the HSE recommends Level 3 Emergency First Aid At Work Qualification.

ASSESSMENT REQUALIFICATION

Participants are continuously assessed throughout the course, with an observation of the participant competency and written examination. The First Aid at Work certificate is valid for 3 years.

We also offer reassessment of the qualification which is 12 hours over two days.

While not mandatory, the HSE also recommends annual half-day refresher courses.

ON THE DAY

You will need to bring a photographic form of identification, comfortable clothing and a willingness to be involved. Food and drink are advised but you will have breaks throughout the day for regular refreshments.

There are no hard and fast rules for numbers or type of course as it depends on your first-aid needs assessment.

You should consider factors such as shift work, location, number of buildings etc.
