The ever-turbulent weather can change overnight.
As we approach the warmer months, we begin to think of ways to tackle the heat.
Most offices now contain multiple computers, laptops, monitors and other electronics. These devices can all emit heat, adding to the warm weather outside.
We often take up an increased number of outdoor activities in the summer further exposing us to the heat.
We must be sensible and take precautions against heat stroke and exhaustion.
Here are our five top tips for staying comfortable in the heat and humidity.
- Remain hydrated – it is recommended that men drink 3.7l and women 2.7l of water per day when it is hot. It is particularly important to be mindful of what we are drinking. High-sugar and caffeinated drinks can dehydrate us. Check out our favourite alternatives to water and get your free hydration chart.
- Close the curtains – to reduce heat indoors, it is good practice to close curtains or blinds for windows through which the sun shines directly. This can greatly reduce the heat inside of a room. As the sun moves through the day, re-open the curtains to improve airflow through the building.
- Consider clothing – lighter clothing will prevent the retention of body heat. If outside, wear a hat to keep the sun from your head.
- Reduce energy consumption – electronic devices all emit heat. Turning off lights, computers, printers etc can help reduce room temperature.
- Go outside – going outside into a shaded area can cool us off. The breeze, out of direct sunlight can be refreshing and cool our overall temperature.
If you believe you or your team are suffering from heat exhaustion or sunstroke, please consult a medical professional.
As a bonus tip, for those who enjoy physical activity try to take a 30-minute break per 60 minutes of activity in the heat.
