With summer finally here, and lockdown restrictions easing, it’s the perfect time to shake up your exercise routine and start working out outdoors.
Please watch our motivational video.
For some people this may sound daunting; not having the comfort and security of the four walls at the gym, but outdoor exercise comes with a huge amount of benefits including:
A blast of vitamin D
Outdoor exercise is a way to get your vitamin D through sunlight. This is especially important if you are overweight, as you are more likely to be vitamin D deficient.
Reduces blood pressure
Even a daily 30-minute brisk walk can help reduce blood pressure.
Exercise your mind
Your mind is more aware outdoors of the changing terrain. Whether you use hills, a beach or a winding path, your mind must focus differently.
Cleaner air
Indoor air can be much more polluted.
Connect with nature
Working out outside helps to clear your mind. Psychologists have coined the phrase ‘green door activity’ when referring to the benefits to our mental health from being in outside or in a green-space environment.
Burns more calories
The wind acts as a natural resistance when you run or cycle outside, so you are forced to work harder.
Sociable
From football clubs to running clubs many outdoor sports and activities come with the added benefit that they involve other people.
Whether you’re running, walking, cycling, or doing step-ups on a park bench, the outdoors is a great place to be. But many people still struggle with motivation or insecurities switching to outdoors.
Seeking the help of a personal trainer to help you exercise outdoors can help you achieve your goals. Personal trainers are very flexible and are trained to be able to perform workouts in almost any environment.
Moving outdoors from the gym could increase your chance of injury. A knowledgeable personal trainer will improve your exercise execution and skill so that you reduce your risk for injury and get the most out of each activity.
A bootcamp in the park with family or friends is a great way to get fit and be social, kettlebells, battle ropes, dumbbells and skipping ropes are all easily transportable and easy to clean!
There is so much that can be done outside, on your own, or with other people. The last few months have taught us to be creative and think outside the box and not allow our minds to create barriers and restrictions.
So, until further lockdown restrictions are eased, and gyms can safely re-open, the prescription, for now, is nature.
