STRESS AND YOU

Stress in the office

What is stress?

Stress is how we react when we feel threatened or under pressure. It can occur when we are in a situation that we don’t feel we can manage or control. This can be at home, in the workplace or in any situation within our lives.

Mental and physical signs and symptoms

Stress can show itself in several ways including being irritable or impatient, anxious, nervous, afraid, or unable to find enjoyment in activities and life. Stress can also be felt physically including fatigue, sleep issues, muscle aches and pains, as well as sudden changes in weight and appetite.

Causes of stress

Many things can cause stress in an individual. These can be smaller events or more significant issues including work pressure or worries about your life both personal and professional. Stress has been shown to cause further progressions into mental health problems including depression and anxiety. These can also be a cause of stress if not managed properly.

Impacts on lifestyle

Due to the mental and physical symptoms of stress, a person’s lifestyle can change. This can include changes to eating and exercise habits as well as social changes. This can include an unwillingness to socialise, go to work or interact with other people.

Nutrition advice

A balanced healthy diet can help reduce the impacts of stress. Ensuring controlled blood sugar levels and the correct levels of protein and carbs are shown to have a positive impact. If you want some help with your diet consult with the CPW team.

Exercise and stress

Exercise has a hormonal effect on the body. Aerobic exercise has been shown to reduce adrenalin and cortisol which has a positive effect on levels of stress. Choose to exercise doing things you enjoy.
