DEVELOPING APPROACHABILITY IN THE WORKPLACE

‘Being approachable is the foundation of building good relationships with your colleagues. It also creates a strong team in which confidence can grow and ideas can flow.’

What does it mean to be approachable?

To be approachable means having the ability and the skills to allow people to feel comfortable approaching you, ask questions and seek help and guidance.

By being approachable, your colleagues may perceive you as friendly, likeable, and easy to speak to. Especially important for those in a management role, your team will feel able to raise concerns and highlight the positives in your workplace.

Being an approachable person will also help bring out the best in others. Creating a positive environment can allow your team to express themselves and highlight their talents.

It is always important to understand your influence on those around you.

Your body language and appearance also play a massive role in your approachability. An open posture and a smile can help put those around you at ease.

How to improve your approachability

  • Have a positive and open body language
  • Smile
  • Keep your office door open- a way of showing availability
  • Show interest in colleagues- ask questions and follow up
  • Start a conversation- take the initiative
  • Use the mobile phone less- it distracts, reduces eye contact and conversation
  • Maintain eye contact in conversation
  • Let them speak- do not interrupt
  • Show that you care and understand
  • Good clear communication

Remember that being approachable will encourage your team to trust you more and open professional and personal conversations.

You and your team may not reach out to someone that is unapproachable and therefore miss out on opportunities to grow and develop.

One final tip

The volume and tone of your voice can come across can also have an impact on how others perceive you. Try to remain calm and use a softer tone when speaking with your team, friends, and family.
