Do you want to reduce absence and increase productivity at work?
Then you should consider increasing tranquillity in the office as part of your workplace wellbeing strategy.
What is tranquillity?
Let’s look at what tranquillity is. It is a feeling of calmness and feeling worry-free, to feel in harmony and at peace, at work and home.
Why is tranquillity important in the workplace?
Tranquillity will increase employees’ wellbeing and mental health. It will increase and promote productivity, develop focus and make the ability to complete work tasks easier.
Another benefit of having tranquillity in the workplace is it helps employees have a clearer mind. This enables them to improve decision-making and creativity.
If tranquillity in the workplace is poor, some of the consequences can be a high turnover of staff and or increased employee absence.
An imbalance of tranquillity will also impact performance and can result in employees losing their enthusiasm and motivation at work. This in turn can lead to making mistakes, which can be costly to the company.
We all work hard and are exposed to different stress factors in life, both at our workplace and home. Therefore, it is vital to give yourself and your employees an environment where they can be tranquil and can take a break to pause a hectic working life for a short while.
To be effective people must have time to renew their energy and clear their minds, to be able to reset and start again.
Tranquillity is an absolute core of the ability to provide a product or service of a high standard and quality. It creates positive energy and outcome. It benefits not only the individual but the organisation itself.
Ideas on how to create tranquillity at work:
Consider what uplifts you at work and what things would give you a more calming vibe in the workplace. Let’s begin with the environment.
Lighting
Poor lighting can affect your mood, but also contribute to eye strain and eye irritation, headaches, and difficulty in reading text. It can also cause aches, stiffness, and poor posture.
Access or exposure to natural sunlight will boost our serotonin (a chemical in the brain) and increase our good mood and boost our energy levels. For cosiness and relaxation, a desk light can make a difference.
Bring outdoors indoors
Motivational pictures, quotes and landscape scenes can promote wellbeing, and reduce stress, high blood pressure and muscle tension. They can even slow our heart rate down. The feeling of being close to nature can also be created by using real plants or artificial plants. Oxygen-generating plants are great for busy offices.
Comfortable chairs
Ensure you are seated correctly to avoid poor posture and chronic injury. In any communal staff rooms try comfortable seating and why not add cushions and a throw?
Music
Music is said to restore harmony between body and mind. It can be soft suitable background music to avoid distraction and disturbance or consider using headphones while carrying out certain tasks. Music helps us to relax and reduce anxiety and slows our heart rate down and lowers our blood pressure.
Water features and fish
Water features and fish can reduce stress and anxiety. The sound of water creates a calming environment. It is also pretty to look at and can provide a talking point, to employees and clients.
Office air
Scents and air purifiers can reduce stress and helps to create a calm and relaxing environment.
Texture and colours
To go a bit deeper to create tranquillity at work you can look at colour and texture. The colours you choose are important and require some consideration, as some colour schemes will feel and create a more calming and welcoming environment than others.
Snack station
Having a selection of herbal teas, hot chocolate, coffees, water, and healthy snacks such as a selection of fresh fruit or dried mixed fruit and nuts etc. can promote healthy eating and increased hydration.
Personalise your desk space/de-clutter
Consider bringing in your own pictures, personalised mouse pad, paperclips etc. to give the desk a more personal touch and feel. Make it yours to feel more relaxed. If you hot desk, don’t forget to take your things back home with you. 😊
Chilling / relaxation / wellbeing area
If space permits, think about offering an area where the employees can relax, de-stress and breathe.
It should enable them to sit down and have a short break, even lie down, to be able to put headphones on for a few minutes and clear their mind to help to unwind if they are experiencing a stressful day.
This area could also be a place where the light can be tweaked. Be as creative as you like to add your own workplace’s distinctive touch.
Other measures that help to create tranquillity at work are:
- Regular breaks
- Regular stretches
- Plan ahead
- Talk to a colleague if you are struggling
- Priorities what needs doing first
- Good communication
- Breathing exercises – you can do this!
Remember, tranquillity can help you achieve your organisation’s business objectives. Happy employees equal satisfied customers and a successful business.
