Whether you are training at home, outside, in the gym or at a personal training studio, it is important you understand what you are doing and how you can keep progressing.
At the start of any training regimen you will see some changes physically and mentally, but if you don’t vary your training you will become bored.
Remember, variety is the spice of life and the same goes for exercise.
Here are some examples of how you can keep motivated and get better results from your efforts.
To begin, choose an exercise so you can relate to the following top tips. For example, a squat.
Reps
Take your repetitions up to increase muscular endurance. If you are going above 30 you need to try one of the other tips too.
Rate
With every exercise correct technique is always required. Slowing the pace of the exercise can help with this and increase intensity.
Resistance
Adding some resistance can increase intensity. Hold a weight or use gravity to your advantage.
Rest
Having rest periods between exercise helps you monitor your progression. Reducing the rest time will make it tougher and having no rest at all will really crank it up.
You can use our perceived exertion scale too. It’s a simple way of making sure you are exercising at the right level of intensity.
Remember all exercises may progress differently and it is important to make a note of all training sessions so you can reflect and stay motivated.
